Measuring Learning Through Engagement in Large Courses
Description: How can you tell if students in a large class are learning while keeping them actively engaged? This hands-on workshop explores strategies that transform engagement activities into opportunities to gather meaningful evidence of student learning. Through discussion, examples, and collaborative activities, participants will identify engagement techniques that align with learning objectives and effectively assess student learning. Faculty will leave with practical, scalable approaches they can apply in any size course. This workshop is a four-session series occurring throughout the Fall 2026 semester, attend the sessions you are most interested in. Each session focuses on a slightly different topic as shown below
- Explain how engagement activities can provide evidence of student learning in large courses
- Identify engagement activities that generate meaningful evidence of student learning in large courses
- Identify learning activities to promote engagement in both small and large-enrollment courses
Session 1 - Starting Strong – Engagement activities that activate prior knowledge and diagnose understanding.
Session 2 - Keeping Students Thinking – Active learning strategies that promote engagement and provide evidence of student understanding throughout class.
Session 3 - Wrapping up with Purpose – Ending class with learning activities that engage students and informs your next class.
Session 4 - Aligning Engagement with Course Learning Objectives and Assessments – Designing engaging learning activities that intentionally support course learning objectives.
