Message from UConn Forest: As we approach Independence Day 2026 many folks are seeking ways to acknowledge the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of our nation. Because our nation has the Constitution it does thanks in many ways to a white oak tree, we are recognizing white oak this year and all the contributions of this species to the history, culture, environment and economy in CT.
This week we would like to announce the “official opening” of the UConn Forest Ancient White Oak Heritage Trail.
On Saturday, June 13, 2026, 10:00 am to noon, weather permitting, a hike is being offered for any interested members of the UConn Community and general public.
We are hosting this somewhat gentle hike to visit white oak trees that are believed to be more than 250 years old and acknowledge the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Participants will hear the legend of the Charter Oak and recognize a small collection of ancient trees, believed to have been growing here at the time of the American Revolution. Hikers will also have a chance to learn about the importance of white oak trees to the history, culture and environment of our state, view active wildlife habitat enhancement activities, ancient tree preservation and forest stand restoration efforts.
The hike will begin at the Horsebarn Hill Road Red Trail head, by the picnic tables near the bend of Horsebarn Hill Road. Meeting place coordinates: 41.821144, -72.247944.
Heavy rain will cancel the event.
