Managing people is mostly conversations.
Supervising others means navigating challenging conversations at times —about performance, expectations, conflict, and impact. These conversations are often complex, may be emotionally charged, and can be easy to put off.
Difficult Conversations: A Guided Discussion Series for Managers is a three-part virtual series for UConn employees who supervise others and are interested in strengthening how to approach these moments. The series, hosted by the UConn Ombuds Office, is discussion-based, reflective, and designed to build across sessions.
The series uses Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most by Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton, and Sheila Heen as a shared foundation for learning and discussion. Participants are expected to read selected portions of the book between sessions (reading is intentionally light; the audiobook is a great option).
This is not a training or performance-based program. It is a facilitated, discussion-based space focused on reflection, shared learning, and practical application.
