As part of an effort to reclaim storage in Microsoft 365, ITS will be initiating the process of closing OneDrive accounts that no longer have an owner. Below are details:
Issue: OneDrive sites with no owner but with operational sharing links
Typically, Microsoft 365 accounts will automatically close when an individual leaves the University. In a few cases, the OneDrive sites did not close as expected. Although the owner no longer has access to the site, it persists, and the sharing links still work (if a file was shared with others, they can still access the file).
Note: This error occurred most frequently if an individual moved from UConn to UConn Health.
Mitigation: Close the accounts after a grace period
These abandoned accounts are a security concern and consume a portion of the University’s pooled storage. Therefore, we will initiate a process to close them.
ITS will make the contents of these OneDrive accounts read-only starting 12/5/2025. This way people who still need the files can still view them, even though they won’t be able to make changes.
If this occurs, they should contact the Technology Support Center to have the account unlocked. ITS will then work with the user to move the necessary file(s) into SharePoint, and re-lock the OneDrive site.
Abandoned sites will be read-only until March 30, 2025. After this date, the sites will be closed.
Suggested Action: If you frequently access files from someone no longer at UConn, check them before March 30, 2025.
