ITS is introducing Gradescope bubble sheet exams, a convenient and flexible way to administer multiple choice exams on paper. We are seeking instructors who want to help test the service during the Spring 2025 semester.
What are Gradescope bubble sheet exams?
Gradescope allows instructors to create, proctor, and grade multiple choice exams in a paper-based environment. You can create answer keys, compile and grade student submissions, and publish grades all from your office. Gradescope will be replacing Scantron for paper-based multiple-choice exams. It offers several benefits:
- Deeply customizable exams with multiple versions, custom point weights and distributions, and multiple correct answers
- Automatically integrated into HuskyCT
- Free template that can be printed on 8.5x11" paper (Scantron requires costly sheets to be shipped)
- Can be scanned on any department scanner (Scantron requires custom scanners. ITS only has 3 in centralized locations.)
Can I still use Scantron?
Scantron is still available during the Spring 2025 semester. ITS intends to retire Scantron scanning services and equipment at the conclusion of Spring 2025 exams. Starting in Fall 2025, Gradescope Bubble Sheet Exams will be the only supported paper bubble sheet solution. Scantron bubble sheets are not compatible with Gradescope.

Can I use Gradescope now?
Gradescope is available in HuskyCT and you can start using it now! Gradescope offers several features beyond bubble sheet exams that various departments have already been using for a few years.
