    Abstract:

It has become common sense to divide the world into the categories of economy, society, and environment, and then try to negotiate their “trade-offs” or find their precarious balance. But what if this framing is complicit in the very problems we’re trying to address? What if we don’t need to search for “economic alternatives,” but rather alternatives to the economy? This talk explores this possibility and presents an experimental framework for thinking carefully and systematically about livelihood beyond the conventional categories. My goal is to contribute toward ways of imagining solidarity-based livelihoods and relationships beyond colonial forms of life built on separation, domination, and accumulation.
