Staged reading of the play "Jago Shundor Chiro Kishor (O the ever beautiful jubilant youth arise and take charge)" by KAZI NAZRUL ISLAM (1899-1976), acclaimed revolutionary National Poet of Bangladesh. The play was translated by Dr. Gulshan Ara Kazi.
Under the leadership of Professor Michael Bradford and student director Daniel Hunter, a cast of students will present a multi-media presentation of this historic play.
Kazi Nazrul Islam was born in India at a time when it was occupied by the British and the political and social tapestry of the country were tainted with violence and bloody riots. As a proud citizen of India, Nazrul was deeply disturbed by British occupation. Armed with his powerful writing skills and excellent vocabulary, Nazrul wrote one of the most earth-shaking poems "Bidrohi (The Rebel)" in December of 1921, when he was a young man of 22. This poem speaks of the ultimate strength of human beings to abolish all obstacles to achieve truth and justice and re-establishes the power of the pen to fight against the sword. This poem is the inspiration for this play.
This is a joint presentation by AsACC, the Theatre Studies Dept. of the School of Fine Arts, Asian & Asian American Studies Institute, UConn Nazrul Committee, and the International Center of Nazrul.
