Jean Schensul, Ph.D, Senior Scientist, Institute for Community Research, is a medical/educational anthropologist, working at the interface of public health and community education. Her career has focused on the translation of social and biological science into useful approaches that are initiated, guided by and utilized by economically, socially and politically marginalized communities in the United States and elsewhere. To address power differentials in research which impede equitable use for social change, she has directed her energies to support two community-based research organizations - the Hispanic Health Council (founded 1978) and the Institute for Community Research (founded 1988), both in central CT. These organizations are located in, part of and trusted by communities that historically distrust scientists, and can broker the engagement of scientists and communities in the co-construction of knowledge and intervention science.
Dr. Schensul is widely published, with over 100 peer reviewed papers, 40 book chapters, and 14 books on community-based research methods. Most of her research with communities in the US and India on substance use, chronic illnesses, and HIV has been funded through multiple NIH grants and cost shared. She founded the Community Research Alliance based at ICR, which collaborates with DPHS on the Seed Grant Program, supports research training for CBOs and links faculty with CBOs for research partnerships. She is adjunct professor in the Dept. of Public Health Sciences and a faculty affiliate in the Yale School of Public Health.
