  • Acute Sleep Deprivation Study Invitation

Study Title: Evaluating Cognitive Awareness and Performance Degradation Due to Sleep Deprivation

Time Commitment: Three sessions a day for 3-days. Each session will be approximately 40 minutes. These sessions will be bookended by two additional sessions that will be conducted in the laboratory. Each of these sessions will be about 2 hours.

Purpose: To learn how individuals cognitive and motor function are impacted due to acute sleep deprivation. To accomplish this goal, we will use an instrumented split-belt treadmill, 12 camera motion capture system, and wearable sensors to measure cognitive awareness and motor function during a walking protocol.

Participant Restrictions: Participants must be healthy and be between the ages of 18 and 40 years old. We are currently accepting participants that have no prior history of lower extremity injuries. Participants will be excluded if they are unable to walk for extended periods of time.

Research Location: The research study will be conducted in the Human Performance Laboratory located in Gampel 104, in Gampel Pavilion on the UConn Storrs Campus and at the participants home.

Study Summary: Participants will be asked to wear spandex top and shorts and a spandex top for data collections. The spandex top and shorts will be provided to you to borrow from the lab. Please wear and bring your own tennis shoes. Before beginning, participants will be outfitted with motion capture markers and wireless EMG sensors. During the data collection they will perform walking. Some of the walking trials will be performed while the individuals are performing cognitive tasks.
