Study Title: Non-standard work arrangements in higher education
We are inviting adjunct faculty (also known as an adjunct instructor or lecturer) to participate in a research study to understand the impact of the non-standard work arrangements of adjunct faculty on motivation, job demands, resources, and well-being which will be used to develop a new survey to evaluate factors affecting well-being.
For the first phase of the study, you are being invited to participate in a virtual focus group, lasting up to 2 hours. In the second phase of the study, you are being invited to participate in a virtual reflective interview, lasting up to 90 minutes. In the third phase of the study, are being invited to participate in a virtual reflective cognitive interview, lasting up to 90 minutes. You may volunteer to participate in any or all of the three study activities where you will be compensated a $50 e-gift card after each session (i.e., focus group, reflective interview, reflective cognitive interview). Participants may not benefit from participation, though you may benefit by providing your voice in the development of a measure that may be utilized in research to support and understand the experience of adjunct faculty.
To be eligible to participate, you must: (1) be able to read and speak in English; (2) be employed part-time in an adjunct faculty role (also known as an adjunct instructor or lecturer), be tenure-ineligible, in a fixed-term, contract-renewable appointment; (3) teach three or more courses per semester (at more than one university or college); (4) rely on wages from multiple adjunct positions as your primary source of income; and (5) desire to have a permanent full-time faculty position. We are looking for a limited number of participants (~ 25). Interest and meeting eligibility do not guarantee participation.
