  • 5/15 Just Transitions Symposium

The University of Connecticut Collaboratory for JUST Innovation and Climate Equity (JUSTICE) will be hosting the Just Transitions Symposium on the UConn campus May 14th-16th and the committee would like to invite you to attend!

    Description:

The scientific evidence that human activity is responsible for the climate crisis is unequivocal, however, much work remains to be done in the social science realm about the transition to a low carbon economy. The idea that high mass consumption constitutes the pinnacle of a developed society was promulgated by Rostow in the 1950s. The ongoing climate crisis has reignited heated debate about the compatibility of capitalism and sustainability. Some scholars argue that shifting to green consumption will be sufficient to transition to a low carbon economy. Others argue that this transition cannot occur without addressing current inequities. Just Transitions as an area of scholarship has emerged from concepts of energy, environmental, water, and climate justice as key requirements of the ongoing and urgent transitions in the energy, economic and social system. Research in this area is posing key questions and developing the knowledge base essential for successful transition. Community based perspectives have been crucial to its definition.  Through this symposium we aim to expand and deepen the ongoing dialogue about Just Transitions across related intellectual communities nationally and internationally.
