  • 2/14 Black History Month: Community African Dance

The African American Cultural Center (AACC) invites you to UConn’s Community African dance workshop for Black History Month. We will learn an inspiring and joyful dance called Funga (a dance of welcome from Liberia and Nigeria), and we will also offer an overview of how various African dance forms migrated to the U.S., creating a beautiful exchange of knowledge throughout the African diaspora. This event will feature live music and drumming from Crocodile River Music.

In this workshop, children, elders, and all dance levels and abilities are welcome as we want to use this artform to build community and connect people from all walks of life. So, feel free to bring people with you

Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a dancer, please try it out or stand on the side and clap your hands and cheer for participants. You will get something out of this experience no matter how you participate.

We are living in a climate where there is tremendous grief, suffering, and oppression on this planet. It is under these conditions and circumstances that we consciously gather in community to dance, sing, and drum for a cause bigger than ourselves. Through these acts of joy, we can send loving energy to all near and far. Please join us in this endeavor. We will gather in the African American Cultural Center on February 21, 2024, from 5:00pm-6:30pm. See you there!
