  • Public Health 12th Week Seminar Series

    Please join the Program in Applied Public Health Sciences for our virtual 12th Week Seminar Series! From November 7th-9th , we will have speakers presenting on some current Public Health topics.  

    On Tuesday November 7th from 6pm-8pm, we have Dr. Brooke Bennett presenting on Public Health and Advocacy for Eating Disorder, Current Efforts and Future Directions. Dr.Bennett is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Clemson University. She earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology with a dual specialty in Health Psychology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The goal of Dr. Bennett’s research is to improve the health and well-being of individuals navigating the current sociocultural and environmental barriers to eating well and developing a positive body image. To advance this mission, she works to identifythe ways in which digital technology negatively impactsthe health of its users and determinehow technology can be used instead to expand the reach of and enhance evidence-based care for all people. 

    On Wednesday November 8th from 6pm-8pm, we have Dr. Nancy Arden McHugh presenting on Transformative and Responsive Community Engagement. Dr. McHugh is a Professor of Philosophy and Executive Director of the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community 

    On Thursday November 9th from 6pm-8pm, we will have Pareesa Charmchi Goodwin, MPH presenting Racism is a Public Health Crisis, and the State is Aiming to Address it. Pareesa Charmchi Goodwin is the inaugural executive director of the Commission on Racial Equity in Public Health for the Connecticut General Assembly. She is a public health and public policy professional, focused on the systems that shape our health options and outcomes. 

    Prior to her current role, she served as the Connecticut Oral Health Initiative’s executive director, where she advocated for oral health access and equity through advancements in coverage and financing, workforce development, and medical- dental integration. Pareesa has also worked in state-level policy analysis and advocacy at Community Catalyst, in municipal policy and practices to support recovery from substance use disorders for Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, and in health policy research focused on financing strategies for children and youth with special health care needs on public and private insurance. She holds a master’s in public health with a concentration in epidemiology from Boston University School of Public Health
