Facilitating group work in small to medium undergraduate classes and labs
Online, link will be sent with registration
Presenter: Tina Huey, CETL-Faculty Development
Group activities and projects benefit student learning, but they can be challenging to manage -- both for the students and for the instructor. Are you looking for ideas for in-class group activities? Would you like to know some ways to support students engaged in longer-term group projects or labs? Are you interested in connecting with other instructors to hear about their experiences with student groups? This is an interactive session for participants to discuss with one another, facilitated by CETL staff. Evidence for the benefits of group work will be shared, along with ideas for structuring it.
Proposed Objectives of this Session:
- Discuss the affordances of, and objectives for, group activities during class
- Become aware of options for structuring group activities during class
- Discuss design of longer term collaborative assignments
- Share ideas for addressing challenges, including free riders, conflict, and assessment
- Share what’s on your mind
Friday, October 6, 10:00 - 11:00
