  • MPTVs & Batteries Banned From Building Interiors

The University’s Senior Policy Council has approved a ban on lithium-ion battery powered motorized personal transportation vehicles (MPTVs) and their batteries from the interior of any UConn-owned building.

The increased use of MPTVs, such as scooters, skateboards, and electric bicycles, on UConn’s campuses has led to significant community safety concerns when they are charged, stored, and used in University buildings.

Students may use MPTVs outdoors on our campuses but must refrain from bringing them indoors or attempting to charge them using UConn’s electrical infrastructure due to potential incompatibility between the devices and the University’s electrical outlets. The University will work to determine if a safe and appropriate storage policy can be identified for these devices and may adjust this policy accordingly in the future.

This new policy is in addition to the ban on MPTVs from inside residential spaces, which became part of the Student Housing Contract in 2014.

Reported violations of this policy will be administered by the Office of Community Standards for students and by Human Resources for employees.
