  • Spanish Language Specialist

    The Auditory Brain Research Lab in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences is seeking a part-time Spanish language specialist to support an ongoing research study on bilingual speakers. As part of the study, participants take a standardized Spanish language test. To assist the lab staff with test scoring, the Spanish language specialist will provide feedback on the grammaticality and typicality of unconventional participant responses to test items. The specialist will be provided relevant test items and de-identified multimedia excerpts of responses and will analyze each excerpt to evaluate the participant's understanding and command of Spanish language.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

    Include but are not limited to:

    • Analyzing multimedia excerpts in Spanish and providing timely written/oral feedback regarding proper use of vocabulary, grammar, and/or pronunciation.
    • Ensuring consistency in excerpt analysis by documenting linguistic/semantic/dialectical rationale for all excerpt analyses.
    • Collaborating with lab members who are proficient in Spanish to determine scoring decisions for excerpts.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

    • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Spanish (or from a Spanish-speaking country), linguistics and/or related field.
    • Native proficiency in Spanish with high level of formal linguistic and semantic knowledge of Spanish, especially of Latin American and Caribbean dialects.
    • Ability to rate accuracy of Spanish language given written and spoken samples in diverse dialects and accents.
    • Excellent attention to detail.
    • Self-directed with demonstrated ability to work independently.
    • Strong Spanish analytical skills and demonstrated mastery of college-level Spanish vocabulary and grammar.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Fluent/proficient in English.
    • Able to work a combination of hours remotely and on the UConn Storrs campus.

    APPOINTMENT TERMS

    This is a temporary position with an hourly rate of $25 and consisting of an expected 5-10 hours/month for 6 months, with possibility of renewal depending on funding and needs. A hybrid schedule of telecommuting may be possible in accordance with the University’s Alternate Work Arrangements policies.
