Scholarly Colloquia and Events

  • 4/12 Psychology Colloquium: Dr.Rong Su

The next psychology colloquium is scheduled for Wednesday April 12th at 3:30pm via WebEx. Dr. Rong Su from Tippie College of Business, University of Iowa will be presenting the work titled “Prosocial Motivation: Workplace Outcomes and Differential Evaluations Based on Gender.” We hope that you will join us!

Abstract: We often hear the saying “nice guys finish last.” Past research on the trait foundation of prosociality (e.g., agreeableness) has often found it to have little benefit for job performance and may even be costly for employee performance and career success. More recently, a growing body of research examined the workplace outcomes of prosocial motivation and reported inconsistent findings on its relationships with employee well-being, performance, and career advancement. In this talk, I will present a conceptual framework that helps integrate the diffuse array of constructs and measures capturing prosocial motivation in the literature and a meta-analysis that reconciles inconsistent past findings by showing when and under what condition prosocial motivation is beneficial or costly for employees. In addition, despite much evidence on the gender differences in prosociality, past research has often failed to find gender to moderate the effects of prosociality in the workplace. I will also present some ongoing research that explains why this may be the case and demonstrates differential workplace evaluations based on gender using the conceptual framework.
