  • 7/31 Explore Engineering: Call for Faculty Volunteers

    Program information:

Explore Engineering (E2) is a residential STEM summer camp for current high school sophomores and juniors. Students explore engineering careers by working with the School of Engineering faculty and students. They will learn what various engineers do in the workplace and see engineering concepts demonstrated.

During the evenings, through participation in a Grand Challenge project, students focus on multiple engineering disciplines. They understand their interests better and learn how to collaborate with other majors through grand challenge projects. The program wraps up with demonstrations of activities the students created during the week. Examples have included: rudimentary EKG devices, Smart Lego vehicles that can follow a trail, fuel cells and other energy-efficient appliances, wooden bridges, environmentally friendly processes, and how to resolve differences.

E2 participants are typically students who are interested in pursuing an education/career in engineering. Some know what discipline they will choose in the future and want to learn more about that area. Others have a general idea, and several students are unsure which major suits them. Our program allows them to explore engineering and learn what each discipline entails for them to make an informed decision regarding their future. These students receive:

    - Exposure to multiple Engineering Programs

    - On-campus housing and dining hall meals

    - Instruction and networking with current faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students

    - Mentoring and coaching from current undergraduate and graduate engineering students

    - Access to state-of-the-art research areas

    - Access to our Engineering Learning Center and use of the center’s associated software

    - The opportunity to participate in Grand Challenge Program

    How to help by volunteering:

Faculty members can give a 45-minute presentation on their field of specialty, experiences, and what the subject looks like at UConn. They can also provide a 60-minute tour of the lab/workspace. They would only have to give a presentation and/or tour once.

We would also greatly appreciate it if faculty members could meet in person and/or virtually once or twice with the camp staff during training (July 17th - July 28th) to review the staff's demo and grand challenge ideas.

    Program dates: July 31st - August 11th

Presentation start and end times: 9:55 am - 10:40 am or 11:10 am - 11:55 am

Tour start and end times: 9:55 am - 10:55 am or 12:10 pm - 1:10 pm
