    Sustainable Community Food Systems Minor

    Graduate Manager (in-person and hands-on with limited remote work)

    The Sustainable Community Food Systems (scfs.environment.uconn.edu) program seeks a graduate student manager to assist with creating and implementing summer educational programs and supervising undergraduate fellows for summer of 2023 (with the option to begin in spring 2023) through August 2023. The SCFS program works with highly motivated undergraduate fellows doing sustainable food production and intensive internship work in the community focused on different aspects of the food system including the environment, food access, social justice and equity, and entrepreneurship.

    This summer the program is conducting a one-week, educational program at the 4-H Education Center at Auerfarm (Bloomfield, CT), centered around food, nutrition, sustainability, community, and social justice for 4th graders. The graduate student will supervise a group of undergraduates leading the programs with the youth.

    The position requires 10-12 hours per week and 40 hours the week of the summer camp (Monday June 26 to Friday June 30). 

    Required qualifications for this position include:

    ·   Familiarity with curriculum design and implementation 

    ·   Leadership skills to guide and supervise undergraduate Fellows

    ·   Strong organizational and communication skills

    ·   Ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences (Fellows, student groups, [undergrad and 4th graders] community members and partners, etc.)

    ·   Cultural awareness of working with and within diverse communities, particularly low-income communities and communities of color 

    ·   Ability to assess and provide feedback on student work, including educational materials

    ·   Knowledge of best practices in education and how to apply in an informal setting

     

    Preferred qualifications for this position include:

    ·   Experience managing other employees

    ·   Knowledge of food and/or sustainability oriented organizations and businesses in communities around Connecticut

    ·   Event management experience

    ·   Knowledge of publicity, social media, and website management

    ·   Previous experience delivering instruction formally or informally to youth 

    ·   Understanding of best practices in program / curriculum evaluation

     

    The successful applicant will have the following duties:

    ·   Work with a group of undergraduates in spring 2023 to finalize summer curriculum

    ·   Supervise undergraduate Fellows and the one-week summer program for 4th graders

    ·   Responsible for the logistics of SCFS programming

    ·   Manage the reporting of Fellows on their activities

    ·   Assist with the recruitment and enrollment of youth participants 

    ·   Interface with elementary school teachers about aligning curricular materials

    ·   Supervise the undergraduate students in charge of publicity

    ·   Maintain relationships with community partners, including site visits

    ·   Identify new potential community partners

    ·   Facilitate organization of events and invited speakers

    ·   Attend and support summer seminar programs

    ·   Carry out other tasks as directed by the PIs
