Scholarly Colloquia and Events

  • First Meeting of #IndigiReads Today

Join us for our first ever #IndigiReads reading group. This semester we will be reading Hi′ilei Hobart’s fabulous book Cooling the Tropics: Ice, Indigeneity, and Hawaiian Refreshment which, “connects the colonialist introduction of ice and refrigeration to Hawaii to current Native Hawaiian food sovereignty”. We will be discussing the book as well as the possibility of forming an Indigenous Food Sovereignty and Climate Justice Working Group on campus.

We will be meeting on four Fridays this semester from 12:30-1:30pm in ODI Commons (Student Union 103), which is the space of the Native American Cultural Programs.

    • February 10th (introductory meeting)
    • February 24th
    • March 10th
    • March 24th

This first Friday we will be handing out books, get acquainted, and discuss how we want to proceed. At this time, we will also discuss how to include virtual participants. Even if you can't make today's first meeting you can still participate in the reading group!

If interested please RSVP through this Google form. The first 20 respondents will receive free books. Duke University Press has also generously offered a 30% coupon for folks who order directly from them (Code: E23HBART).
