  • Data Collector Opening for Research Project

    Position: Data Collector (hourly, part-time, temporary, variable/flexible schedule) Salary: $28 per hour.

    Availability: Positions available for a minimum of 10, and up to 30 hours per week (Monday-Friday) during the 2022-2023 school year. Number of available hours per week varies based on the data collection cycles. Flexibility and availability during elementary school hours required (typically 9:00am to 3:00pm), especially in fall and spring.

    Supervisors: HILL for Literacy Facilitator and Lead Data Collector

    Description of Research Project: HILL for Literacy, Inc., in partnership with The Integrated Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (I-MTSS) Research Project, is seeking applicants with experience working in classrooms and schools to assist in the data collection for a federally funded research project. The I-MTSS Research Project is a high-profile grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education consisting of three studies. This study phase seeks to evaluate the impact of integrated Tier 1 behavior and reading supports on students’ behavior and reading outcomes in grades K to 2.

    Duties: Data Collectors will be responsible for independently conducting in-person classroom observations specific to the goals of the research project. Multiple classroom observations will take place in each classroom participating in the study. Data Collectors will be required to:

    Training: Data collectors will receive paid training from UConn Research Staff prior to data collection in the use of quantitative observation instruments for conducting classroom observations. In addition, 2 hours of paid time provided to complete online CITI training in ethical research conduct. Anticipate training upon hire for winter (January-March) and/or spring (April-early June) data collection cycles.

    Knowledge, experience, and ability: Experienced education professionals, or advanced level students, with relevant experience working in classrooms and schools preferred (e.g., candidates who have completed coursework in education, positive behavioral interventions and supports, and/or applied behavior analysis; candidates with experience collecting observational data in other research studies).

    Position Requirements:

    Demonstrated ability to learn and follow procedures and protocols for a behavioral research project. Required to complete training in the use of specific measures and observation instruments, and to achieve a certain level of reliability when conducting observations. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with research staff, project personnel, and research participants. Ability to travel to school research sites, adhere to confidentiality policy and willingness to work flexible hours.

    • Conduct classroom observations during foundational reading skills instructional block

    • Collect and enter data for K to 2 classrooms in participating schools

    • Intermittently observe classrooms with another data collector to monitor inter-observer agreement

    Technology skills: Basic understanding of electronic communication, entering information in online forms, and familiarity with devices such as iPads, laptop, or desktop computers. Comfortable with entering data at timed intervals using a timer application.

    Travel: Travel to schools in Waterbury, CT and/or Fall River, MA areas required. Mileage reimbursement in accordance with Project reimbursement policy provided.

    Background checks: Permission to conduct a background check will be sought as part of the interview process. Successful completion of a criminal background check is required for employment.
