    JOB SUMMARY

    The Molecular and Cell Biology Department is seeking to fill a 12-month Laboratory Assistant position. The successful candidate will provide support for undergraduate teaching laboratories in the Department. Assists faculty in the care, use, and maintenance of animals, plants, chemicals, and/or reagents used in research and/or teaching. The estimated start date is December 30, 2022, and expected work hours would be Monday – Friday from 7:00am to 3:00pm which includes one hour for lunch.  

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Plans, assembles, and prepares any apparatus necessary to carry out all experiments in the laboratories.
    2. Glassware washing and sterilization.
    3. Assists with the care of zebra fish.
    4. Decontamination of biohazard waste following approved safety guidelines.
    5. Monitors the safety and security of labs.
    6. May act as a stockroom clerk.
    7. Maintains sterility and cleanliness of all apparatus. Performs minor repairs on equipment.
    8. Maintains the inventory of supplies and orders as necessary.
    9. Assists in preparing, setting up, and monitoring laboratory practicals.
    10. Participates in discipline-specific lab procedures, including tissue or specimen collection and testing.
    11. Operates equipment, instrumentation, and software to maintain conditions as required by research or educational goals.
    12. Performs related work as required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field with up to one year of related experience or Associate’s degree in a related field with two years of related experience.
    2. Working knowledge of standard laboratory procedures, including safety and hazardous waste disposal (chemical and biological).
    3. Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office and related software applications.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Post-degree laboratory experience in an academic setting.
    2. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
    3. Ability to communicate effectively.
    4. Ability to work with diverse student, administrative, and faculty populations and provide a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an educational setting.

    APPOINTMENT TERMS

    This is a full-time, 12-month permanent position with a one-year probationary period, and a full range of medical, dental, and retirement benefits. The tentative start date will be Friday, December 30. This position requires the incumbent to lift 40 lbs, perform repetitive tasks and be able to stand for an extensive amount of time while performing these tasks.
