    JOB SUMMARY 

    The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) at the University of Connecticut is conducting an internal search for an Associate Vice President for Research/Research Development (AVP/RD). This position is responsible for advancing research development efforts within the OVPR and overseeing Research Development Services (RDS) and other research development staff.

    Reporting to the Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship (VPRIE), this is a full-time management position and will be responsible for leading and managing many aspects of the OVPR’s efforts in research development including: strategic research advancement; oversight of internal funding and research support; communication of research and research opportunities; enhancement of collaboration/team science; training and education; and oversight of proposal support for large, complex, and multi-institution collaborations.

    The AVP/RD will be responsible for identifying opportunities for significant research growth (including, as appropriate, major external funding) and catalyzing (when necessary, building) high-impact disciplinary and multidisciplinary teams to successfully pursue them. In support of this goal, they will ensure that the OVPR effectively highlights major funding opportunities appropriate to the various fields (e.g., research centers of excellence, training grants, program projects, challenge grants, federal, state, and regional initiatives, etc.); facilitates engagement among faculty at UConn Storrs, UConn Health, and regional campuses, as well as other research institutions as appropriate; oversees the preparation of highly competitive proposals to federal and state agencies, private foundations, and business entities; and assists with site visits by funding agencies.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

    • Collaborating with senior UConn leadership to identify research priorities and align those with agendas of relevant funding agencies.
    • Facilitating events and other opportunities to identify complementary research interests among UConn faculty as well as faculty at other institutions, and promote multi-disciplinary research initiatives and proposal efforts.
    • Developing strategic partnerships with government agencies and industry partners seeking a collaborative relationship with the University to facilitate faculty research.
    • Promoting the University’s research capabilities and accomplishments to strengthen the University’s visibility to external funding sources, coordinating these efforts with OVPR and institutional communications offices.
    • Providing leadership, vision, and compelling models for the growth/development of our Research Development Services Unit, including identification of short, medium, and long-term goals/activities, oversight of internal funding programs and initiatives, faculty training and resource support, staffing requirements, priorities, and roadmaps.
    • Growing/developing our large/complex proposal development support program and developing and managing a comprehensive program for identifying and disseminating information regarding opportunities for significant research initiatives, internal funding investments, and major external funding opportunities. 

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

    • A current employee at the University of Connecticut/UConn Health.
    • Tenured Associate or Full Professor.
    • Minimum of three years of experience in research development or a supervisory role.
    • Demonstrated experience working effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and administrators.
    • Evidence of effective team building and leadership skills in a collaborative environment.
    • Demonstrated experience with the development and facilitation of major interdisciplinary research proposals.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated experience marketing research opportunities and impact.
    • Knowledge of federal research, foundation, and grant funding programs and processes. 
    • Familiarity with Research Development best practices.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

    • Ph.D. (or equivalent professional degree) in science, engineering, social science, or health field.
    • Experience leading a university unit (department, center/institute, college/school, academic or research program, etc).  
    • Ability to evaluate research opportunities in multiple disciplines.

    APPOINTMENT TERMS 

    This is a full-time, 12-month, management-exempt position. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
