  • 10/5 Presentation: Glacier Research in Alaska

Adventure Center Presentation October 5th 6pm. Join us for UConn student led presentations about their personal experiences and stories.

This week’s topic: Glacier Research & Expedition Life on the Juneau Icefield.

The Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) is a unique opportunity for students to ski-mountaineer across an icefield and perform meaningful glacier field research for two months. Learn about glacier travel and safety, including building snow and ice anchors, creating haul systems (in case someone falls into a crevasse), navigating around icefalls, and working on rope teams. Hear about crazy expedition stories, including icefield ghost stories and pranks from past groups. Additionally, learn what camp life is like, including how to hand-wash your clothes with glacier water, how to not get trench foot, and how to cook for 60 people at a time. See the raw beauty of the icefield, and all of the quirks of the program. Lastly, see why so many people come back to JIRP after being students on the icefield expedition.
