  • Seeking Human Subjects for Powered Mobility Study

    Study Title: Powered Mobility Study

We are recruiting healthy children between 2 and 12 years of age to participate in a study that examines how young children learn to navigate through their environment using a motorized device. The information from this study will be used to help guide interventions that promote mobility for children with mobility impairments.

The research study will involve participation in a single visit to our lab in UConn’s physical therapy program in the Storrs campus. A week prior to the lab visit, we will drop off 2 activity monitors (the size of wrist watches) at your home at a time based on mutual convenience. Your child will be asked to wear the activity monitors on both their wrists for 1 week’s duration to track their habitual arm activity. We will also provide you with an activity monitor and sleep log to keep track of wear time for the activity monitors and your child’s sleep and wake time for 1 week.

During the lab visit, your child will be encouraged to drive a joystick-operated powered ride-on-toy through a set of paths in our lab while wearing the activity monitors. We will videotape your child’s performance for later scoring. The activity monitor and sleep log will be collected at the end of this lab visit.

This study was approved by the UConn IRB, Protocol # H19-042.
