    Facilitating the Success of International Students: Inclusive Classroom and Career Readiness (Virtual)

    With the special guest presenter Theodore Menounos, the assistant director of Career Coaching & Counseling from Center for Career Development, we will explore the ways to make courses work better for international students and foster belonging and activate diversity to enhance learning. In this interactive workshop, we will share experiences, scenarios, and opportunities that often arise when students and instructors from diverse parts of the world gather in a class. Tools and strategies will be suggested for promoting interaction and helping international students learn.

    First 30 minutes lecture is aim to enhance participants' recognition of:

    • cultural and linguistic diversity
    • make class roles visible to encourage participation
    • implicit bias
    • effective course activities for openness and trust
    • strategies and resources for equitable participation

    For the next 30 minutes, guest speaker Theodore Menounos will present on how to support international students on their career readiness:

    • Advising faculty members on how they should handle international students that go to them for career advice.
    • Talk to faculty members about the career champions program
    • Helping faculty members understand that international students typically do not have an established professional network and often view them (faculty) as an important part of their growing network and someone that they can go to for advice and support.
    • Providing faculty members with a basic understanding of the employment challenges that international students face in the U.S.

    For the rest of the time, depending upon the interests of participants, the discussion may include:

    • Dual-language learning, thinking, and note taking
    • Difficult dialogues
    • Things that are on your mind!
