  • Hiring Part-time CDL Drivers

    The Institute for the Brain and Cognitive Sciences (IBACS) seeks temporary CDL drivers to be part of a driver pool for a 2012 IHC Navistar LifeLine Mobile® Laboratory. This position is responsible for round trip transports of the mobile laboratory from the UConn Storrs Campus to a defined location in Connecticut and/or the greater New England, with a focus on destinations that reach underserved communities and public gathering spaces. The exact destinations of the research and outreach events are subject to change.

    The driver must arrive in advance of the trip to inspect and if necessary, fuel the vehicle. The driver is responsible for transporting the vehicle, with is contents and occupants, to a defined location, where the driver is then responsible for safely parking and stabilizing the vehicle and preparing its systems for use. The driver will remain on-duty during the duration of the trip and support the research and outreach team in using the vehicle’s systems. Upon completion of the event, the driver is responsible for preparing the vehicle for travel and safely returning the vehicle, along with its contents and occupants, to the UConn Storrs campus.

    This is an on-call part-time truck driving job that is perfect for the licensed CDL Class A or B drivers seeking supplemental income and looking for anywhere from 0 to 12 hours a week based on the Institute’s needs. Drivers must have flexibility to work weekend evenings and weekends.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Drive and safely operate the vehicle from UConn Storrs Campus to a defined location
    • Map out driving routes ahead of time to determine the most expedient trip, and adjust the route to avoid heavy traffic or road construction, as needed
    • Pre-inspect truck
    • Ensure there is sufficient gas in the tank for the destination
    • Stay on duty and remain with the vehicle during the research or outreach event
    • Assist the research and outreach teams with using the vehicle’s systems
    • Report any equipment issues

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Relevant CDL
    • Experience operating similar vehicles for work purposes
    • Compliance with all road and transport rules
    • Ability to drive safely irrespective of the weather or time of day

    APPOINTMENT TERM

    This is an on-call part-time truck driving job. Salary will be $35 per hour.

    Employment of the successful candidate is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination, including drug testing, as well as a criminal background check. Additionally, based on the CDL Class A license requirement, employment of successful candidate will be contingent on a FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse review. The successful candidate may be required to participate in random drug testing.
