    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the general direction of the Executive Director of the Innovation Partnership Building (IPB), the Academic Assistant will coordinate and provide technical support and safety guidance to faculty, staff, students, and other researchers in a large research facility.  In collaboration with Center directors, e.g., AMC, the incumbent will provide support for specialized equipment, Center research, and outreach. The incumbent will also facilitate the implementation of UConn safety requirements in close collaboration with the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S).  This position provides critical scientific support services in a state-of-the-art research facility with specialized equipment by helping to ensure a high functioning and safety-conscious research work environment.

     DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Supports operation of analytical and mechanical testing equipment.
    • Performs measurements with advanced analytical and mechanical equipment.
    • Supports equipment maintenance and interactions with equipment vendors.
    • Supports the development of scientific papers and presentations.
    • Supports lab PI's in developing research or fee for service proposals.
    • Serves as liaison between research facility personnel and EH&S to maintain compliance with UConn Health and Safety Policy and regulatory standards while ensuring all lab personnel receives training before engaging in research activities and receive safety information.
    • Routinely communicates with and advises the Executive Director on safety and injury/illness prevention efforts and activities.
    • Works with research personnel to ensure EH&S requirements and University protocols are observed in labs using chemicals, radioactive materials; machines that emit ionizing or non-ionizing radiation (including lasers); biological materials; or recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid.
    • Verifies compliance with EH&S trainings and IPB lab awareness protocols as applicable.
    • Participates in laboratory visits or inspections conducted by EH&S; conducts or coordinates regular laboratory safety self-inspections, using or incorporating forms provided by EH&S.
    • Assists PI's and other supervisory staff with proper documentation and investigation of all incidents, injuries, and near-misses.
    • Works with IPB Building Manager and staff to maintain EH&S safety compliance of the IPB building.
    • Must be willing and able to be on-call to report to work during emergency closures, inclement weather, or for significant events that affect laboratory operations and functionality.
    • Performs related duties as required.

     MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Bachelor’s degree in materials science, chemistry, engineering, or a related field.
    2. At least four years of related experience.
    3. Prior experience in operating analytical and mechanical testing equipment, analyzing data, and preparing technical documents.
    4. Sound technical skills and demonstrated knowledge of scientific principles.
    5. Ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and industry partners and build and maintain positive relationships.
    6. Demonstrated communication skills and ability to train or present to small groups.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Master’s degree in materials science, chemistry, engineering, or a related physical sciences or safety discipline. 

    APPOINTMENT TERMS

    This is a full-time, 12-month, annually-renewable position with an excellent benefits package. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
