"Mines and wines – application of biogeochemistry from rocks to plants and humans"

    Abstract:
The biogeochemical cycling of trace elements, the transfer of metals and metalloids from rocks to soils to waters to organisms, is important as it controls the health of plants and humans. We can apply geochemical techniques and approaches to studying the biogeochemistry of trace elements in historical and contemporary systems. In this talk, we will examine two cases studies applying geochemistry to understand how trace metals behave. The first focuses on a former Mn mines in western Massachusetts and the second examines the transfer of potentially toxic metals from rocks to wines in major wine producing regions of the United States.
