“Understanding Institutional Diversity and Lack of Transparency in Environmental Organizations”

Please join us for a virtual Teale lecture, to be streamed live on Thursday, March 24 at 4:00pm EDT.

Dr. Taylor is a world-renowned environmental sociologist. Her groundbreaking work in the field of environmental justice, with particular focus on racism in the environmental movement, has garnered her numerous accolades from organizations such as: the Smithsonian Institution, National Audubon Society, National Science Foundation, and the Sierra Club (to name just a few!). Dr. Taylor has published extensively on themes linking politics, social identity, and conservation. Among the many books she has published are foundational works focused on racism and socio-economic dimensions of exposure to environmental hazards (“Toxic Communities: Environmental Racism, Industrial Pollution, and Residential Mobility”) and the first history of environmental injustice in the USA (“The Environment and the People in American Cities: 1600s-1900s, Disorder, Inequality, and Social Change”).

Of particular note, is Dr. Taylor’s 2014 publication of a landmark national report on the extent of racial exclusion in the US environmental movement: “The State of Diversity in Environmental Institutions: Mainstream NGOs, Foundations, and Government Agencies.” The findings of her study stimulated environmental organizations to work on better representing the demographic diversity and interests of the American population. She has since published updates to this study, tracking diversity data and diversity reporting of the largest environmental organizations in the US. Dr. Taylor’s impressively extensive and thought-provoking work as a leader in the fields of environmental justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion has enacted lasting, positive change by highlighting institutional and social inequities and providing actionable ways to overcome these imbalances.
