Additional UConn Information

  • International Students - File Your Tax Return Now

Now is the time to file your tax return with the IRS.  If you earned income in the U.S. in 2021 you are responsible to file a tax return by April 18, 2022 and should pay attention to the information below.  The VITA program at UConn and Sprintax software are available to students and scholars to help you file  your 2021 income tax return.  If you did not earn any income, but were present in the U.S. skip down to the bottom for instructions on submitting the 8843 form.  Contact ISSS @ international@uconn.edu with any questions you may have.

    OPTION 1 -
File your taxes with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program at UConn.  VITA is a free program run by trained UConn student volunteers and they will help you fill out your federal and State tax return documents. Register with the VITA program at the link below.  VITA will start taking appointments after March 1.  Please allow a minimum of 5-7 business days for VITA to review your submission and respond to you.  https://accounting.business.uconn.edu/undergraduate/vita-program/

Review - How to Prepare for your virtual VITA appointment.

    OPTION 2 -
VITA may not be able to assist every student.  If you are not able to file your taxes with VITA, Sprintax is a software that specializes in nonresident alien tax returns.  UConn can provide you with a code to use to file your federal tax return for free but there is an additional fee to file your CT state return. To learn more visit: https://isss.uconn.edu/tax-preparation-resources/  email international@uconn.edu with your name and student ID number.
