    Andrea Dutton

    Professor, Department of Geoscience

    University of Wisconsin-Madison

“The View from Here: A Geologist’s Perspective on Living Through Climate Change”

Please join us for the first virtual Teale lecture of the Spring 2022 semester, to be streamed live on Thursday, February 10 at 4:00pm ET.

Professor Dutton is a self-described carbonate geochemist and sedimentologist with interest in research questions focused on paleoclimate and paleoceanography. Currently she focuses on sea level reconstruction over glacial-interglacial timescales with an emphasis on establishing the behavior of sea level ice sheets during interglacial periods. Using this information, Dr. Dutton hopes to better inform and predict future sea-level rise. Her pioneering work uses fossilized corals and limestone in the geologic record to understand how climate warming has affected past sea level rise. By assessing past sea level fluctuations, Dr. Dutton predicts how current and future climatic changes will affect coastal communities around the globe.

Among her many accolades, Dr. Dutton is a 2019 MacArthur Fellow, Fulbright Scholar (2019-2020), Geological Society of America Fellow, and a Faculty Fellow of the Thompson Earth Institute. In addition, she was acknowledged by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “25 People Shaping the Future in Tech, Science, Medicine, Activism, and More.” She is also keenly involved in public engagement, emphasizing the importance of climate communication in her public speaking events, notably giving a TEDx talk (“Reframing Sea Level Rise”) and participating in the NOVA documentary: “Decoding the Weather Machine,” which was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2019.

This WebEx event is open to the public and viewers may submit questions via chat during the live program.
