    Rubrics: Grade smarter, not harder
    November 10, 11:00-12:30
    Online
Presenters: George Michna, Education and Lauren Schlesselman, CETL-EdTech

Grading rubrics are an assessment tool that helps instructors and students focus attention on the important aspects of an assignment. Rubrics promote grading practices that are consistent and free from bias. This introductory workshop explores the elements of a rubric, methods to design rubrics with and without student involvement, and how to apply them within your courses. In the first part of the workshop, the discussion of rubrics will include attendees working in small groups to collaboratively evaluate sample rubrics. Additional discussion will describe how to effectively interpret rubric data formatively and apply rubrics for grading. Finally in the remaining time, participants will begin to develop or revise a rubric for a course assignment.

To maximize the benefit of this workshop, please have a copy of a syllabus and an assignment you use for one of your courses available.

    Workshop Outcomes:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

    1. Identify the value and role of rubrics in measuring student learning
    2. Recognize the steps in creating a rubric
    3. Connect rubrics with outcomes and learning data
    4. Identify an assignment in your course that could use a rubric and draft the criteria
