Scholarly Colloquia and Events

  • 11/1 You're invited to SLHS Talk on Health Disparities

SLHS will be hosting our second colloquium of the semester. We are continuing with our theme of Health Disparities and are thrilled that Dr. Carlos Benitez-Barrera, post-doc fellow at the University of Texas at Dallas has agreed to talk with us about how he has approached this in his current work. Please join us on Monday, November 1st at 7:00 PM on the WebEx link provided below.

We welcome attendees from all disciplines and departments!

Title: Noisy Environments During Childhood: Language Disparities Later in Life?

Abstract: Environmental noise is ubiquitous to children’s listening experiences. However, the extent to which noise impacts children’s neural language processing and their behavioral language outcomes is unknown. Children from low-SES backgrounds are known to be raised in noisier neighborhoods and homes than children from higher-SES backgrounds, which could lead to disparities in accessing language input, and ultimately, overall language skills. In this presentation, Dr. Benítez-Barrera will review his research on neural speech and language processing in noise, to make the case that environmental noise might be a factor underlying, at least in part, language disparities between children from low and high-SES backgrounds.
