    Fall 2021 PSLA Seminar Series

    Date: Friday, October 8, 2021

    Time: 12:15 -1:15 pm

    Venue: Floriculture Room 101

Title: Spatial Dynamics of Incentivized Forest Stewardship

Presenter: Dr. Julia Smachylo, Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture, UConn

Abstract: Julia will present recent research on the spatiotemporal dynamics of incentivized stewardship in southern Ontario, Canada. The presentation will focus on the use of landscape approaches to soil and forest reclamation by the province in the mid- to late-twentieth century, and their legacy, bringing attention to the ongoing role of state spatial strategies to counter ecological crises. The historic deployment of softwood forest plantations will be highlighted as both an immediate and latent state response, alongside their current integration into market- and nature-based climate strategies. Emphasis will be given to the use of drawing and time-based media in the investigation of these practices.

Biography: Julia is a recent graduate from the Doctor of Design program at Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) with a background in urban planning and design. Her research is situated at the nexus of urban theory, planning and political ecology and her recent work investigates the dynamics of forest management and urbanization with a particular focus on how the rise of incentivized environmental conservation is mobilizing new public and private stewardship strategies.
