Information for Deans, Directors, and Department Heads

  • Approving a Gen Ed Course for Intensive Session

REMINDER: Departments need special one-time permission from the General Education Oversight Committee (GEOC) to offer a General Education course during Intensive Sessions of four weeks or less (Winter or May). This includes any courses carrying a CA1-4, Q or EL designation. W courses are generally not allowed to be offered for Intensive Session.

If you are unsure if a course has been approved by GEOC for Intensive Session, please see the "GEN ED COURSES APPROVED FOR INTENSIVE SESSIONS" list on GEOC’s website.

PLEASE NOTE that if your course was previously offered in the Intensive Session as a non-Gen Ed and you recently added Gen Ed designations to it, the course is NOT automatically approved to be offered in Intensive Session. You must still request permission from GEOC.

The form to request offering Gen Ed courses in intensive session can be found here: https://geoc.uconn.edu/faculty-forms/ . It is called “Intensive Session/Intersession Curriculum Action Request Form.” Faculty will need to include both a syllabus for when the course is offered in its regular session and a syllabus for when the course will be offered in Intensive Session that shows how the course schedule and assessments will be adapted for the condensed format. The committee will compare the two syllabi to be sure that the intensive session version retains enough of its Gen Ed content to maintain its designation in the condensed form.

Please also be aware that the committee review process can take several weeks. Any department wishing to offer a currently-unapproved course for the Winter Intensive Session should plan to submit their request within the next week or so at the latest. Intensive Session requests received in October may not be approved in time for January.
