  • Seeking Human Subjects for Running Research Study

    University of Connecticut

Volunteers Wanted for a Research Study

Association between kyphotic angle and running mechanics

You are invited to participate in a research study. This form includes information about the study and contact information if you have any questions.

The purpose of this study is to determine the association between posture and running biomechanics. We will measure your posture and perform a gait analysis while you run.

You are eligible if you are between the ages of 18-60 years-old, healthy (do not have current or recent injuries or surgeries within the past year, prior positive COVID test, clinical diagnosis of COVID-19, tape/adhesive allergy, active skin infections, active eating disorder, being told by a medical provider not to exercise, and family history of unexplained sudden death before the age of 50), and run a minimum of 10 miles/week.

This research will take place during Spring 2021- Summer 2022 in the Human Performance Laboratory in Gampel Pavilion on the University of Connecticut campus in Storrs, CT. If you agree to take part in this study, you will complete a form about your age, sex, current and past medical history of musculoskeletal injuries, current weekly running mileage, and running footwear. Your height, weight, posture, limb length, and foot type will be measured. Finally, you will run on a treadmill for approximately 10 minutes. Video will be recorded during the gait analysis. Participation will involve approximately 2 hours of your time on one day.

We believe the only known risks associated with this research study are the potential for a fall, musculoskeletal injury, or cardiac event; however, this will be minimized with appropriate safety measures and the overall running challenge will be less than your normal running activity.

We will do our best to protect the confidentiality of the information we gather from you but we cannot guarantee 100% confidentiality.

You will not be paid for this study; however, you will receive a complete gait analysis report of your running biomechanics. Free parking will be available at Gampel Pavilion.

You do not have to be in this study if you do not want to be. You do not have to answer any question that you do not want to answer for any reason.  We will be happy to answer any questions you have about this study. If you have further questions about this project or if you have a research-related problem, you may contact Michelle Bruneau at Michelle.Bruneau@uconn.edu or Laurie Devaney (Department of Kinesiology) at Laurie.Devaney@uconn.edu.

If you have any questions about your rights as a research participant, you may contact the University of Connecticut Institutional Review Board (IRB) at 860-486-8802.  The IRB is a group of people who review research studies to protect the rights and welfare of research participants.
