Using Data Visualization Platform to Engage Your Students
    Wednesday, April 7, 12:00-1:00
    Online
    Dr. Natalia V. Smirnova

Contemporary students are curious and tech-savvy. They are excited to explore real-world application of the textbook material, and work with data because “Big Data” is a buzz word in their realm. They are also “visual” learners, so the creation of charts, graphs, and maps will entice them to look deeper into the subject matter, ask questions, analyze, and discuss. This workshop will teach the instructors how to engage our students with data visualization.

    Description:
In my 1-hour presentation, I will share my application exercises (AE) that use Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) database. Those exercises can be utilized by any instructor and any student from anywhere in the world: FRED portal is free; it is current; it has a lot of data about a lot of things. I will showcase several examples of data acquisition, data mapping, and assessment instruments. I will guide the participants through one example of obtaining data, saving it, creating a dashboard, sharing it through HuskyCT, and creating assessment vehicles for it on HuskyCT.

    Participants will:
    1. Practice using the Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) interface
    2. Experience a learning activity using FRED
    3. Discuss ways to engage students based on the model activity
    4. Discuss student assessment strategies based on the model activity
    5. Discuss applicability of FRED in other disciplinary settings
