Sunday, February 28th is Rare Disease Day – affecting more over 300 million men, women and children worldwide. A disease is identified as rate if it affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people. While some rare diseases are the result of bacterial or viral infections, about 72% are genetic, with many rare diseases resulting in premature death of infant and young children, as all pediatric cancers are considered rare.
February’s WELCOA Health Bulletin highlights facts surrounding Rare Disease Day, it’s history and how to show your support or story on February 28.
