  • 1/11 Duo Required for Remote Desktop Gateway

ITS has deployed two-factor authentication (2FA) with Duo on the Remote Desktop Gateway. This change better protects your remote connection to the university network.

After January 11, you will receive a prompt on the device that you have designated as your second factor (e.g., mobile phone) after you launch the service and enter your NetID credentials. Duo works differently when integrated with RDG:

    • You will not see a screen from Duo security that asks you to choose an authentication method. Instead, it will only interact with you via your personal device.
    • Because there is no screen, you cannot enter a code. You have to respond by accepting a push notification from the Duo mobile app or receiving a phone call.
    • If you do not have a mobile phone or a landline at the location where you work added to the UConn 2FA service, you need to make these updates. Go to netid.uconn.edu. From the drop-down menu under My NetID, select Manage 2FA. For the most seamless service, ITS strongly recommends that you add a smartphone to the service, install the Duo mobile app, and enable push notifications.

We are aware that this complicates use of the remote desktop service. As an alternative, consider switching to a virtual private network (VPN) connection.
