Seminar Title: “Market Concentration in Agricultural Services“
Abstract:
We study the sector of agricultural support services for crop production, which is upstream from the farm in the production chain. This industry is not covered by censuses, and existing publicly available statistics are limited. To fill this gap, we use the Longitudinal Business Database (LBD) – restricted access dataset of all US establishments, constructed from administrative IRS records. Over the past 25 years number of establishments in agricultural services has declined, and an average establishment has grown older and bigger. We then turn to examine how industry dynamics are affected by local competition. We find that growth in employment, payroll and wages was slower in counties with higher market concentration. We plan to explore how these trends are further affected by concentration and output of the farming sector.
