  • Interim Roles in the Student Union and UConn Rec

We are pleased to announce that Cynthia Costanzo has agreed to serve as the Interim Director of the Student Union for the Division of Student Affairs.   Cyndi has been overseeing UConn Recreation as the Executive Director since 2012. Cynthia earned a Masters of Art in Biophysical Science and a Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training from the University of Connecticut. She served in multiple roles prior to coming to UConn, including corporate wellness and as the Senior Associate Director and Title IX Coordinator for Athletics at Western New England University. She welcomed the opportunity in 2015 to join with UConn stakeholders to initiate the design, development, and construction of the new Student Recreation Center for the Storrs Campus, which opened in 2019.  UConn Rec provides more than 650,000 participants recreational programming in the areas of Outdoor Adventure, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness, Intramurals, Cycle Share and Special Events. Cynthia and her husband, Paul, are proud parents of twins, James and Emily, who both graduated from UConn in 2019.

Additionally, Jay Frain, who currently serves as the Director of UConn Recreation, has agreed to serve as the Interim Executive Director of UConn Rec. Jay earned his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Tennessee and a Masters of Science from Middle Tennessee State University in Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Following graduation, he worked for the University of Northern Iowa Wellness and Recreation Department managing their Outdoor Programs Cente.  He joined UConn in 1999 and developed the Outdoor Adventure and Fitness/Wellness programs.  He also served on the project team tasked with bringing the new Rec Center to campus. Jay lives in Coventry with his wife Melissa and their two dogs, Cujo and Harley.

Please join me in welcoming Cyndi and Jay to these roles as of August 3, and supporting them in these interim positions.

    Michael Gilbert
