  • Connecticut Campus Compact

    Dear Colleagues,

Effective January 1, 2014, the Office of the Provost and the Office of Public Engagement are pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Farley as Executive Director of Connecticut Campus Compact  (CTCC) and the relocation of the CTCC office to the Greater Hartford campus in June 2014. UConn President Susan Herbst serves on the National Campus Compact Board of Directors.

Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education. Campus Compact promotes public and community service that develop students’ citizenship skills, helps campuses forge effective community partnerships, and provides resources and training for faculty seeking to integrate civic and community-based learning into the curriculum. State affiliate offices provide leadership and assistance at the local, state, and regional levels to mobilize resources and provide support for member campuses. More than 20 Connecticut colleges and universities belong to the CTCC, and Matt will lead the organization to achieve greater synergy between and among these colleges and universities.

Matt will remain an employee of UConn during his tenure as Executive Director of the CTCC and will continue to work within the Division of Student Affairs and collaborate closely with Dr. Carol Polifroni, our Director of Engagement. Matt joined the Office of Community Outreach (Student Activities) in August 2003 and oversees approximately 60 on-going programs, one-time projects, and alternative break trips that engage over 2,500 student participants annually in service to our local, national and international communities.  Additionally, Matt is the director of the Community Service Learning Community and co-directs Careers for the Common Good. Matt also serves as the Chair of the UConn Public Engagement Forum and will continue in that role.

Matt has worked in various aspects of higher education including Residential Life, Campus Ministry, and Academic Affairs. His primary experience is in developing and sustaining university-community partnerships and organizing community service-learning initiatives. Before coming to UConn, Matt was the Associate Director of the Program in Afterschool Education and Research at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education where he directed Harvard’s GEAR UP program. He has a BS in Business Administration from Stonehill College and a Masters in Public Administration from UConn.

During Matt’s tenure, UConn was recognized with three awards by the Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service for the breadth and depth of student involvement in community service: Katrina Compassion Award (2006), General Community Service Award “With Distinction” (2011), and President’s Award winner (2012). The Presidential Award is the highest honor that a university can receive for its work in service-learning programs, civic engagement, and commitment to volunteerism.

Please join us in congratulating Matt on his new role in furthering the University’s mission and values of engagement and public service.
