Research, Funding, and Awards

  • Blavatnik Family Foundation Funding Opportunity

The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) plays a central role in the continuing success and development of the faculty’s research, scholarship, and creative endeavors through its leadership and support services in Research Administration and Research Development.  A critical mechanism for cultivating research development and enhancing research capacity is to foster interdisciplinary collaborations with diverse academic partners and institutions.  To this end, the OVPR will be conducting an internal screening process in support of the Blavatnkik Awards Regional Postdoctoral Competition sponsored by the Blavatnik Family Foundation.

The Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists were established in 2007 to acknowledge and celebrate the excellence of outstanding scientists from institutions in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Although the 2014 Blavatnik Awards for faculty-rank scientists have been expanded to a national competition, the Blavatnik Awards for postdoctoral researchers will continue to focus on top candidates working in the New York tri-state area. Winners in the postdoctoral competition will be awarded $30,000 each in unrestricted funds, and finalists will be awarded $10,000 each. Each institution may nominate up to 15 candidates.  Nominations for the 2014 regional postdoctoral competition are open until January 31, 2014.

To be eligible, a candidate must:

    • Have been born in or after 1972.
    • Have earned a doctoral degree (PhD, DPhil, MD, DDS, DVM, etc.).
    • Currently hold a postdoctoral-rank position at an academic institution located in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut.
    • Have made significant research contributions to disciplines within the life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering

For the internal process, candidates must be nominated by a faculty member.  The nominations must include the following information and be submitted to Larisa.Zagorski@uconn.edu as a word file no later than January 10, 2014:

    • Basic biographical and contact information for the candidate and nominator.
    • Nominator’s Rationale for Nomination: a statement explaining why the candidate is being nominated (maximum 2,000 characters).
