Title: Dispelling Pseudoscience: Aligning Special Education Teacher Preparation with Evidence-Based Practice
Abstract: Grounding special education teacher preparation in the use of evidence-based practices (EBP) is essential to increase the quality of teacher pedagogy and positively impact student outcomes. Further, federal education initiatives such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (2004) and the Every Student Succeeds Act (2015) mandate the use of EBP. In a technological age with infinite suggestions at our fingertips, teachers must be equipped with a critical eye to discern hype and misinformation from research and evidence. This presentation will explore my vision for the infusion of EBP into the special education teacher preparation program at the University of Connecticut. I will discuss ways to empower future and current teachers with the skills to: (a) differentiate between EBP and pseudoscience; (b) locate and evaluate EBP across disciplines; (c) practice using EBP within classroom settings; and (d) how to collect and interpret data to evaluate effectiveness of EBP use.
