"An Interdisciplinary Approach to Understand Disease: Big data-driven Modeling"

One of the major challenges of translational health research is to understand and predict a disease progression based on the big datasets: electronic records, phenotypic testing, genomic testing, and behavioral data. Often these complex datasets require an interdisciplinary approach to make individual- and population-based decision by interfacing epidemiology, data science and applied computing science theories. In this talk, I will present how a disease-related complex dataset can direct us to build mathematical models to understand how an infectious disease spreads and predict how an individual-based decision making can help to stop that disease. I will also present, how a new mathematical modeling framework can improve the traditional vaccine efficacy measurement by combining individual patient-level information and disease status. Ultimately, these data-driven methods will open multiple doors to the scientific communities to investigate complex diseases using interdisciplinary approaches.
