Graduate Seminars in Academic Writing Coming Back this Fall | These are Free |
Apply by July 24 for Full Consideration
During 2013-14 school year, the University Writing Center will offer no-cost seminars in academic writing for UConn graduate students. While there will be some direct instruction, individual conferences, and possibly guest lectures by UConn faculty, the seminars will focus on peer-reviewing each participant’s working draft—that is, the course will adopt neither a lecture nor skills-and-drills format but instead function as an interactive workshop. When the class concludes, participants will be encouraged to form ongoing writing groups.
These seminars do not carry UConn academic credit, nor are they graded. We simply aim to help graduate students improve their writing in ways that will serve them well in their academic careers.
Learning to write well takes time, commitment, and experience, and while no single course can do the job, this 5-week seminar will give participants guided practice in becoming more skilled writers of research and scholarship. Students must come with a working project (for example, a dissertation chapter, journal article, grant proposal, or course paper) because they will apply the strategies covered in class to that ongoing project.
During the 2013-14 academic year the seminar will be offered 3 times:
· Session 1: Sept 3 – Oct 3, Tues/Thurs 5 – 6:30 pm
· Session 2: Oct 14 – Nov 13, Mon/Wed 4:30 – 6:00 pm
· Session 3: Early Spring Semester 2014 (exact dates TBA)
Classes will meet for 90 minutes, 2 times per week. In addition, participants are expected to commit 3 additional hours per week to completing assignments and peer-reviewing the drafts of others.
Applicants must be full-time, degree-seeking UConn graduate students. International students are welcome.
The application form is available online (Please make sure to use your UConn email address in order to complete and send your application):

For full consideration for either of the two sessions during the fall semester, please submit your application by July 24, 2013. Applications submitted after that date will be considered if spaces are available. (A call for enrollments in the spring 2014 seminar will be announced during the fall semester.)
Course enrollment is limited to 20 students per session. If we receive more applications than there are seats available (which is likely), we will make decisions about enrollment based on seniority, the urgency of the proposed project, the degree of fit between the course and the applicant’s writing project, the application submission date, and the motivation of the applicant. We expect to inform applicants about acceptances and session assignments around August 10, 2013.
