    Director of the Sustainable Global Cities Initiative (SGCI)

    JOB SUMMARY

    The Sustainable Global Cities Initiative (SGCI) is seeking a UConn faculty member to serve as its Director. The SGCI aspires to become a premier, university-wide initiative that will function as a hub of activity, networking and support for city-related research and scholarship at UConn and thereby contribute to meeting the University’s goals of doubling research and bring scholarship to bear on issues in Connecticut and beyond. An assessment of the feasibility of the SGCI was initiated in 2018 and led to a five year funding commitment starting in 2021-22. Reporting to the Director of the UConn Hartford Campus, the new SGCI Director will provide the leadership for sustaining and expanding the SGCI. 

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Establish operational objectives, consistent with the SGCI Mission, in collaboration with the Director of the UConn Hartford Campus and the SGCI Faculty Advisory Committee
    • Sustain and expand effective relationship with UConn colleges and schools relevant to the SGCI research mission
    • Enhance the financial sustainability model through expanding internal support, in-kind funding and extramural funding
    • Implement major elements of SGCI strategic plan:
      • Build community among the over 85 SGCI Faculty Affiliates
      • Support faculty and student research
      • Keep the University and wider community informed about current urban research
      • Develop Hartford research data sources and archives
    • Develop new programmatic activities supportive of the SGCI mission

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Current full-time UConn appointment at rank of tenured Associate Professor or Professor, including Associate or Professor-in Residence, in one of UConn’s schools or colleges
    • Active research program on urban-related topics
    • Deep commitment to antiracism, equity and inclusion

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Knowledge of broad field of urban research
    • Ability to work strategically and with enthusiasm to enhance a high-quality program
    • Experience in community engagement in an urban setting
    • Commitment to build and support a multicultural and diverse research community
    • Excellent communication skills

    APPOINTMENT TERMS 

    Fall semester 2021 start date with a projected 3-year term, with renewal possible. The Director will hold a .20 FTE appointment (annual two-course buyout) during the academic year and will receive one summer month compensation. Other teaching, research and service duties in the home department will be maintained.
