Alternative Assessments in an Online Course
    Wednesday, 4/8, 1:15-2:30
    Online
    Presenter: Wayne Trembly, CETL

Note: Teaching Talks are designed as conversations among colleagues. Please come prepared to share ideas that have worked for you. Also come with whatever questions you may have. The more participatory the Talk is the more effective it will be.

Focus: Finding alternative ways to assess the learning in an online format. Deciding when the “tried and true” is appropriate and when we may need something else.

We will discuss topics such as:

    • Formative assessments- how, how much, how often
    • Summative assessment:
    • Pass/Fail versus our normal grading system.
    • Giving tests and quizzes online- what works, what may not work. What about cheating?
    • Open book, open note, open computer, or a variation
    • Projects, presentations, or papers instead of or in addition to tests
    • Study guides
    • Student presentations online
    • Using Discussion Board, Announcements, and Messages to assess and to communicate
    • Blogs and journals
    • Small group projects and/or assessments
