  • Panda Express Withdraws from Student Union

UConn will be seeking a new retailer to fill the Student Union space previously occupied by Panda Express, which has closed its location in the food court.

The University accepted bids earlier this year when the lease expired for the approximately 700-square-foot space. Panda Express was UConn’s top selection in the process, but the franchisee recently decided to remove itself from consideration.

Panda Express had operated in the Student Union for more than a decade, and UConn appreciates the service it provided to guests and its role in helping the University offer a diverse array of dining choices.

UConn will be seeking new proposals from potential companies who wish to operate in that space, and will announce the results once terms of a lease contract have been finalized with the top choice. The time frame is being determined.

Panda Express had closed for the summer as part of its traditional practice, and recently removed its signage and other items from the space after deciding against signing a new lease.

Its franchisee told the university that it was withdrawing due to the difficulty of operating a store that is geographically far from its other locations. The next closest Panda Express is at Foxwoods Resort Casino, and the other four Connecticut locations are all in Fairfield County.
